The unique microstructure of this coating consists of an aluminum-rich dendritic phase that begins solidifying first, leaving zinc-rich interdendritic channels. When exposed to rain, wind, and corrosive atmospheres, the zinc sacrificial process occurs along these channels, sealing any scratches or cut edges. Once the initial zinc phase stabilizes, the aluminum oxide barrier layer halts further oxidation.
The silicon content is not merely an impurity; it acts as a critical boundary agent that controls the thickness of the brittle intermetallic alloy layer formed during the hot-dip immersion. Without silicon, the interface layer between the steel core and the Al-Zn alloy grows rapidly, reducing the coating’s flexibility.
