What is the difference between Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) and Pre-Galvanized steel tubes?

Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) tubes are welded from black steel and then fully immersed in a molten zinc bath (~450°C), resulting in a thick, metallurgical-bonded zinc-iron alloy layer inside and out (typically 400g/m² - 600g/m², or 55–85μm thick). Pre-galvanized tubes are manufactured from steel coils that are galvanized prior to forming and welding. The weld seam is sprayed with zinc afterward, with typical coatings ranging from 60g/m² to 275g/m². HDG offers significantly higher corrosion resistance for exposed outdoor use, while pre-galvanized is more cost-efficient for indoor or dry conditions.

How does coating thickness relate to the expected service life in various climates?

Under ISO 12944 corrosivity classes: In a C3 environment (urban and industrial atmospheres, moderate sulfur dioxide, or low-salinity coastal areas), zinc corrosion rates are typically 0.7 to 2.1 μm per year. A hot-dip galvanized tube with an 85 μm coating can perform for over 40 years before first maintenance.
